Two versions of this were released, one by
SNEAKERS and the other by Anthrox & Swat
(thought these two merged?). Anyway both
SNEAKERS and Anthrox & Swat released WarGods as
a 64 mbit rom. The question is why didn't they
work? Protection? Nope... It was just ripped as
a 64MB game when it was 96MB... Anthrox & Swat
then released the working 3 hours later
[AS-WGODS.ZIP].

Take Mortal Kombat, and put it in a VF, and what
do you get?! Yep you guessed it, WarGods!

It has really nice graphics. The characters
are sure polygonal, but they don't seem to, they
don't look blocky either, like in, say, Tekken 2.
The animation is really smooth and you won't see
any slowdown here. As expected from the N64, the
graphics come perfectly anti-aliased, making War
Gods a nice eye-candy. To clean somepoints out,
N64.com and EGM said the game lacked frames of
animation, specially when you perform a throw; my
opinion? No way, I tried to see the "empty
spaces" between throw-moves frames without
results.

Now, the levels are nicely done, I just wish
there were more of them. The effect of fighting
in 3d is almost real. Some of the graphics
really help build the excitement while playing.
There isn't much movement in the background,
which is a good thing because you'll be able to
focus on the fight. There's almost
NO-interactivity with the levels.

This is the game's first and most noticible
aspect.I must admit I did not believe what I was
hearing to: stereo sound! While I haven't heard
stero-mixing stuff, the music is clear and loud,
going from tribe-like to orchestrated music. The
music is true CD-quality. There's though a "bug":
the sound becomes a little bit distorted when
there's much blood or proyectiles in the game,
not to mention while performing gory fatalities.

The sounds are average. The character's groans
are just to add the feeling of being hurt, but
they are a little bit on the quite side. The best
about the sound is the announcer's voice which
shines brightly. If you thought MK's announcer
was cool, wait until you hear War Gods'; it is
not as creepy, but it is fluid, clear and
"with an accent" you'll eventually like. And to
follow Midway's tradition, the anouncer's voice
is the same as the last boss': Exor. A funny
aspect about this voice is that it somehow
reminds me of Darth Vader's, specially when
Exor wins the match and says:
"It's useless to fight me". Pretty good!

By the way the music and SFX voulumes are
separated and thus, adjustable. So if you don't
like either of them, just turn them off. But I
recommend playing with both of them loud because
they add to the playing experience a lot.

The controls are the Mortal Kombat-like, using
High and Low Kicks and Punches, the typical Block
button and a new 3dbutton. This last button helps
in some "cornering" situations when you need to
escape by moving "in" our "out" of the Arena or
by doing a 3d evade move or a 3d jump. This
button is also used to perform some 3d attacks
and fatalities.

Don't feel scared about the 3d button, you will
get used to it and push it seldomly. I even found
it a little useless,or at least not as useful as
MK's Run button. Now the running is done by
tapping forward on the control twice.

You are allowed to play with the D-pad or the
A-stick. Now the only "bad" thing about playing
with the A-stick is that you can't assing any
movement to the Z button, it is assigned by
default as the 3d button.

The characters respond with accuracy at your
control movements, well, most of the time. I don't
know if its just me, but sometimes I try to make
a 3d finisher and the "god" just makes a 2d hit.

You will have a good time playing this game. The
characters are varied and it is nice to just
watch the winning animations and hear at the
announcer's comments. Some of the finishers are
commical while others are disgusting and plain-
gory. By the way, before attempting a fatality,
be sure to have turned them ON, on the options
menu.

Some of the combos are fun to watch, but they
require more timing than Mortal Kombat's. The
good thing about this combo system is that there
are combo breakers, while not flashy as Killer
Instinct's, they are useful. As I said, the 3d
movement is not that necessary, but it helps
sometimes.

War Gods has the tipical difficulty levels, from
very-easy to very-hard. The CPU controled gods
are sometimes cheap, but they are not too hard,
in fact I found this game easier than Mortal
Kombat Trilogy (and I am not saying it was any
easy) when playing against the normal rivals. No
Jades' jump-and-punch-like cheat in here.

Now the final bosses look mean, but the meaner
looking, Grox, is also the dumbest. Why? It is
easy to cheat him, believe me, I won him with a
perfect victory twice in the normal level. How?
I won't tell so I wouldn't ruin the fun of
finding the cheat yourself. Even if you change
the difficulty, Grox is very easy to beat. What
about the final boss, Exor? Well, he his very
difficult even in very-easy level, but if you
move on to normal or very-hard levels, he will
surely be a pain in the ass!! Exor must be the
cheapest final boss ever to appear in a fighting
game, but he is still beatable if you can find
the correct strategy.

Replay value here is only posible if you want to
master every character or see those nice
finishers. Oh! and don't even bother to see the
different endings because there aren't; no matter
if you change difficulty level or characters. I
found this strange and disappointing coming from
Midway, why did Mortal Kombat had great line
plots and endings while War Gods has only an
excuse to fight?
Who knows...

Finally =)

I highly recommend War Gods if: 1) you liked the
Arcade version, 2) you would like to see a 3d
Mortal Kombat-clone or 3)you want another
fighting game. If you haven't figured it yet
from my comments, this game is better than
Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I must warn you though,
this is game is not for everyone.
